Four people were injured – one seriously – in a crash involving five vehicles on slippery Route 5 in South Buffalo, police said.

Police said snowy and icy conditions may have been a factor in the crash, which occurred in the southbound lanes near the Tifft Street exit early Saturday afternoon.

A Jeep spun out of control, striking another vehicle. Three other vehicles, one of them a tractor-trailer, then struck either guardrails or one of the first two vehicles, said Martin Forero of the Buffalo Police Accident Investigation Unit.

One person suffered a serious leg injury, but none of the injuries was believed to be life-threatening. Police said three of the injured were taken to the Erie County Medical Center for treatment, and a fourth was taken to Buffalo General Medical Center. Police, city firefighters and ambulance crews rushed to the scene.

Names of the victims were unavailable Saturday evening. The crash caused police to shut down parts of the southbound Skyway for more than three hours.
