The latest project by the West Seneca Environmental Commission involves cleaning curbs near storm drains, then attaching aluminum medallions bearing the message: “No dumping – Drains to Waterway.”
The joint effort by the Erie County Department of Environment and Planning, and the West Seneca Engineering Department is aimed at preventing household waste such as pesticide residues, automotive, cleaning products and pet waste from entering local creeks via the town’s storm sewers.
“Many people do not realize that storm drains are the entry point into the storm sewer system, and that storm water runoff leaving the system is not treated prior to entering rivers, streams and lakes,” said Rick Rutkowski, vice chairman of the town’s environmental commission.
The storm drain marking project is part of a larger storm water management program to keep the Lake Erie watershed free of industrial, commercial and residential wastes.
The work will be done this month. For more information, contact Rutkowski at 824-0016.
