Upstate Niagara Cooperative took top honors in five categories at this year’s New York State Fair in Syracuse. The company won Dairy Day Awards in a variety of categories at the regional competition, including top awards for Upstate Farms yogurt, Bison dip and Upstate Farms buttermilk. Upstate Niagara’s sour cream, marketed under the Bison brand label, received top honors with an Award of Excellence for a score of 96.

The cooperative’s Bison brand recently swept the 2013 World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisc. as well.

“As a farmer-owned cooperative rooted in New York State, we take enormous pride in winning the New York State Fair Dairy Day Awards. We have a long history of winning awards in New York State and we are equally proud that our products are recognized on a world wide front based on the awards we received at the World Dairy Expo,” said Jim Murphy, Upstate Niagara Cooperative’s chief scientific officer.

Also this week:

• A representative of state Sen. Mark Grisanti will be in the Brant Town Hall, 1272 Brant-North Collins Road, from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

• The Boston Town Board will meet to review its agenda at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Town Hall, 8500 Boston State Road, followed by a regular meeting at 7:30 p.m.

• The Boston Zoning Board of Appeals will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in Town Hall.

• Just south of the county line, the Seneca Nation Farmers Market runs from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the William Seneca Building, 12837 Route 438, Irving, N.Y. Vendors include fresh local produce, organic meats, homemade pasta, spices, dips, and more.

• The Elma Library Board of Trustees will meet 7 p.m. Tuesday at the library at Rice and Bowen roads.

• The Elma Town Board will meet 7 p.m. Wednesday in Town Hall, 1600 Bowen Road. On the agenda will be a re-appointment of Assessor Kandace Wittmeyer and a date to set the public hearing for a permit for American Grill Restaurant to use acreage behind the restaurant on Seneca St. located in Elma for a grove.

• The Marilla Town Board will hold a special meeting 7 p.m. Thursday in the Marilla Fire Company Recreation Hall at 1940 Two Rod Road with representatives of the Quasar Energy Group. Quasar will answer questions and concerns from the board and the public regarding a proposed plan to store bio-waste at an Eastwood Road farm owned by Stanley Travis. Travis has applied for a permit through the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to store sludge material in his million gallon storage tank .

• A fundraiser and benefit will be held on September 14 at the Lancaster Elks Lodge, 33 Legion Pkwy, Lancaster, for Marilla resident and Iroquois high school student 16 year old Stephanie Szymanski who is suffering from Lyme Disease. The family has done all they can financially for the bills including refinancing their home. Any donations can be made in her name at the Alden State Bank. Tickets for the benefit can be bought by calling Shirley at 652-9007.

• A blood drive will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Wales Town Hall, 12345 Big Tree Road.
