The Holland School Board voted 6-1 Monday to approve the request of a child care business to operate a before- and after-school program in the former Holland Middle School.
Superintendent Cathy Fabiatos said the rent from It’s a Small World Child Care is the type of revenue officials had hoped the nearly vacant building would generate after the district was reconfigured last year.
The former middle school has been without students since September 2012 when a district-wide reconfiguration left only district offices in the building. Students are now housed in either the elementary school or the junior-senior high school.
It is the second tenant at the Partridge Road facility. Currently, the Erie Board of Cooperative Education Services rents one room in the building for record storage.
The child care group, which operates two other facilities in Depew, found two rooms up to its specification. Both are large, have in-room sinks, storage space and sliding doors that lead to a play area outside.
The space will earn the district $750 a month from September through December and then $1,000 monthly through June.
Brian Jones was the lone board member to oppose the move. “I don’t think we, as a government entity, should subsidize a business entity,” he said. Jones noted that the Depew-based business is competing with local businesses that provide similar services.
The Holland program, to be known as It’s a Small World Kids Club, is accepting children kindergarten through age 12. Doors will open in September with a capacity of 40 students. Morning and afternoon programs are $9 per session. On school recess days, full-day programs are available for $36. Plans to operate a summer program in the building are still in the discussion phase.
In other matters, tax rates for the 2013-14 year were approved as follows: Aurora, $33.75 per $1,000 assessed value, up 3.38 percent; Colden, $30.74, up 5.68 percent; Concord, $30.07, up 5.63 percent; Holland, $14.41, up 3.38 percent; Sardinia, $24.27, up 5.19 percent; Wales, $31.43, up 3.38 percent; Java and Sheldon, $17.73, up 3.74 percent. A change in equalization rates for Concord, Colden and Sardinia lifted their rates, Bagley said.
