An Orchard Park Central high School student placed in the Top 10 in testing during the DECA International Career Development Conference and competition recently in Anaheim, Calif.
Sydney Wawrzyniak placed in the Top 10 for the test portion of her competitive event. Sydney was one of four students from the Orchard Park chapter of DECA at the conference, joining 16,000 students and advisors from across the world at the conference. They competed in various business-related contests, including marketing and human resources.
Also in the district, students will be playing a different tune, thanks to the Music Boosters and Alumni Association. The two groups teamed with the district, to come up with $60,000 to buy instruments to help replace some of the aged instruments that outlived their ability to be repaired.
This is the fourth time a collaboration similar to this has been achieved over the last 20 years.
“It’s been a few years since we have had any money available for equipment, so this is a terrific shot in the arm for the students in the OP music program,” District Music Coordinator Chris Revett said.
The district bought string basses, cellos, violas, tubas, euphoniums, bass clarinets, a xylophone, a set of marching drums for the Middle School, a vibraphone, a marimba, and some add-on uniforms.
