Hamburg
Village of Hamburg officials are looking into constructing a roundabout at the intersection of Lake and Main streets. The village has four roundabouts, built during the Main Street reconstruction several years ago.
Village Trustee Laura Hackathorn said the village plans to submit an application for a state grant, but will miss this round of funding as the deadline is Monday.
Village Administrator Donald Witkowski said the potential for the village to win a grant in this round of funding was low, but the village had hoped to get feedback on its application. Now, the village will have time to come up a with a firmer cost estimate for the construction.
“We’ll keep working on that for next year,” he said.
And at the Frontier School Board meeting last week, the board reinstated three positions that were reduced in budget cuts last spring. One of four remedial reading teachers at the elementary level was reinstated, but no decision has been made about which school the teacher will be assigned to. That will hinge on the district’s study of the just-released state assessment tests.
The board also approved increasing a .6 full-time equivalent English as a Second Language teacher to a .8 position, to be able to accommodate the needs of a Chinese student.
The board also reinstated a high school counselor/guidance staffer, with the district paying for half the position and a grant funding the other half of that counselor’s position.
In all, the district is spending an estimated $167,000 on the three personnel moves.
The board’s decision to raise the price of school breakfasts and lunches by 50 cents for the first semester was a compromise after the board wrestled with the issue of increasing the cost too much. The original proposal was to raise prices by $1.
“I think a dollar is a big stretch to go from $2 to $3,” Board member Patrick Boyle said.
In the end, the district could still see its lunch prices go up by $1 over the course of the school year, if the district decided it needed to do that to reduce the amount of a projected food service shortfall.
For now, the new prices are: $1.75 for breakfast; $2.50 for lunches and $2.75 for middle and high school lunches.
The board’s next meeting is at 7 p.m. Aug. 20 in the board room of the Frontier administration building at 5120 Orchard Ave., Hamburg.
