West Seneca as a field trip destination for schoolgirls from the Bronx?
It happened Wednesday, as Professional Women in Construction, in conjunction with Kemper System America, led a group of teenage girls and a teacher from the Bronx Design & Construction Academy on a tour of Kemper’s production facility in the town. The tour was part of PWC’s new mentorship program that introduces young women to career opportunities in nontraditional fields.
Kemper’s production facility was opened in 2010 to meet the increasing demand for liquid-applied waterproofing systems made in the United States.
“There is great demand for women in construction,” Kathleen Courteau, Kemper’s chief administrative officer, said in a statement. “We hope to convey the message to the next generation that they should ‘go for it’.”

• This is the final week of the Native Roots Artists Guild exhibit at the Charles E. Burchfield Nature & Art Center, at Union Road and Clinton Street. “Art with Native Roots” is the art of the Haudenosaunee, or People of the Longhouse. The exhibit is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
• The Town Board meets at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Council Chambers at Town Hall, 1250 Union Road.
• East Elementary School is hosting its last Celebrate Learning Night from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The event will showcase student work from kindergarten through grade six. This fall, the elementary school building will become part of an enlarged East Middle School, while elementary school students will attend either Clinton Street or West elementary schools.
• Bids for garbage and recycling totes will be opened at 10 a.m. Friday in the town clerk’s office at Town Hall.
• Due to popular demand, a presentation about the works and life of Charles E. Burchfield will be repeated at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Burchfield Nature & Arts Center. Reservations are required; call 677-4843.
