Erie County spends about $175 a day to keep each prisoner in its jails, while Monroe County spends about $150 daily for each prisoner, according to a report presented at Tuesday’s meeting of the Community Corrections Advisory Board, a group aimed at improving Erie County’s jails.

According to information culled by board member William Schultz, Monroe County offers its inmates certificate training programs in landscaping and greenhouse operations, as well as food service, plumbing and carpentry. Upon release, he said, inmates in Monroe County’s two jails are more likely to find a job and less likely to re-offend and wind up back in jail.
Some board members said they want a better handle on similar programs that Erie County might offer its inmates, and whether the programs in Monroe County could be duplicated in Erie County’s two jails.
“They’re spending less in Monroe County, yet their people are getting more. Why? We need to know why so we can help,” said the board’s vice chairwoman, Nan L. Haynes.
