The SPCA Serving Erie County will offer free vaccinations Saturday to dog owners in select ZIP codes to protect against canine parvovirus – commonly called parvo – a contagious and potentially deadly virus that affects dogs of any age, breed or sex.
The common signs of the intestinal form are severe vomiting and diarrhea, usually bloody. Treatment often involves veterinary hospitalization. Because this is a virus, there is no cure, and death rates can reach 91 percent in untreated cases, the SPCA said.
Vaccines can prevent the infection, while an unvaccinated dog can pick up the disease just by walking in the neighborhood.
The SPCA has seen a large number of cases in specific sections of Buffalo and will offer the free vaccinations to dog owners in the following ZIP codes: 14204, 14206, 14208, 14209, 14211, 14212, 14214 and 14215.
The vaccinations will be given from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday on the main level of the parking garage at the Broadway Market, 999 Broadway.
For more information, call the SPCA at 875-7360 and ask for the veterinary department.
