Toys R Us, the scene of a Town of Hamburg killing more than two weeks ago, has offered a $25,000 reward in the case that has left police still unsure whether the slaying could have been a botched robbery or a targeted attack.
Town of Hamburg police, in conjunction with Greater Buffalo Metropolitan Crime Stoppers and Toys R Us, announced the reward for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the person who killed assistant store manager Laurence C. “Larry” Wells II at about 5 a.m. June 29 in the McKinley Parkway store.
Crime Stoppers previously had offered its maximum amount of $1,000, bringing the total now being offered to $26,000.
“This reward is being offered to help Larry’s family learn the truth behind this tragic event and to assist in bringing the responsible individual to justice,” Town of Hamburg police stated Monday afternoon.
Detectives still are trying to determine whether the killing was a robbery or targeted attack.
“We have equal evidence for both sides of that argument,” Capt. Kevin A. Trask said. “We don’t have a clear-cut motive.”
Investigators also haven’t ruled out the possibility that the attack was carried out by a disgruntled employee or ex-employee.
Police have said Wells, 35, was stabbed two or three times by a man who had entered his tiny office when it was empty, shut the door behind him and then dismantled the video-surveillance system about seven minutes later. Wells was attacked when he entered the office.
The profile of genetic material found on the apparent attacker’s University of Florida Gators basketball cap did not match anyone in a DNA database, Hamburg town police have said.
