A stubborn fire burned for several hours through the Olive Garden Restaurant on McKinley Parkway in Blasdell Saturday, and when volunteers firefighters finally extinguished the blaze, not much was left of the restaurant.
When the Newton-Abbott Fire Department arrived, flames were shooting through the roof, preventing the firefighters from entering to attack the blaze.
Firefighters used a ladder truck to place streams of water onto the fire. But wind whipped the fire, and it burned for several hours. The building is a total loss.
Olive Garden later released a statement:
“We are extremely thankful no one was inside the restaurant at the time of the fire. We appreciate the efforts of the Blasdell firefighters and are grateful they are all safe. Right now, the well-being of our team members is our number one priority. We are already working to place them at other Olive Garden locations, as well as other Garden restaurants, in the area, as we assess the damage to the restaurant.
Hamburg Town Police Department would not release any information about the fire, saying it was under investigation.
