Just two weeks after receiving training, a Hamburg police officer on Tuesday successfully revived an unconscious 25-year-old man by administering a drug used to reverse opiate overdoses, police reported.

Officer John Miller was dispatched around 2:40 p.m. to a commercial business lot on Lake Avenue where a motorist had pulled over to request emergency medical services for his friend, who was unconscious and pale with inadequate breathing, the department said in a post on its Facebook page.

Miller administered the life-saving intranasal naloxone spray and the patient’s condition improved enough that he was conscious during transport to Mercy Hospital, police said.

About 160 Town of Hamburg, Village of Hamburg and Village of Blasdell police officers and nine Hamburg-area fire companies received naloxone training on May 20 and 21 from Dr. Brian Clemency, emergency medical services director for the Hamburg fire companies.

Additional training sessions will be conducted in June in Erie County for other police and first responders with New York State providing supplies of naloxone at no cost to participating municipalities and agencies.
