A federal grand jury has added new charges in the prosecution of a former nursing supervisor accused of illegally selling prescription pain killers.

A four-count indictment made public today accuses Catherine Vitello, 41, of Elma, with distribution of hydrocodone, fentanyl and alprazolam, and maintaining a drug-involved premises.

Vitello, who was first arrested in October, was director of nursing at St. Catherine Laboure Health Care Center, a long-term care facility associated with Sisters of Charity Hospital, when the alleged conduct took place.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John M. Alsup said Vitello, on three separate occasions in October of 2013, sold prescription drugs to a confidential source working with the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Investigators said Vitello’s job gave her access to unused drugs stored in her office safe, and estimate she made more than $60,000 from her drug dealing over the course of a year.

Vitello’s indictment is the result of an investigation by the DEA, Lackawanna and Buffalo police and the Erie County Sheriff’s Department.
