Springville officials have taken the first steps toward constructing a new fire garage in the village.
The Village Board unanimously agreed to establish a committee Monday night to explore possibilities for a new structure.
“We’ve established a need to build a new fire garage,” said Mayor William Krebs. “We’re trying to locate the fire garage and find the funding for it.”
The committee will have five or six members, he added, and will include representatives from the Springville Volunteer Fire Company and Erie County Sheriff’s Department.
Village officials have met with fire company members to learn what they need.
The Sheriff’s Department, which occupies offices in the Village Hall, could benefit from the new garage.
“If the addition is built into this building, there would be additional space for the Erie County Sheriff’s Department,” Krebs said.
If no addition is constructed, a separate facility could be created.
Board members also chose Clinton Brown Co., an architectural firm on Main Street in downtown Buffalo, as a consultant to prepare a request for the Preserve New York Grant. The village will ask for $15,890 and submit buildings to be included in the National Register of Historic Places. Structures on East Main Street, Elk Street, Prospect Avenue and Myrtle Avenue could be nominated.
The Preservation League of New York State provides the grant.
