Hamburg to get more video lottery money

Hamburg got a substantial bump in aid from New York state for being a host community for the video lottery terminals at Hamburg Gaming.

The newly adopted state budget includes an extra $185,503 for the Town of Hamburg, bringing the total to $865,679 this year.

Municipalities that host a video lottery gaming facility have been receiving payments from the state since 2007. Hamburg’s take had been more than $1 million, but that amount was cut by the state by more than half in 2011.

“This is a huge victory for the Town of Hamburg and the extra funding to the town could be used for a variety of things like continuing to lower taxes, infrastructure or other projects,” State Sen. Mark Grisanti, R-Buffalo, said in announcing the increase in the budget.

Grisanti sent a letter about the lottery terminal funding to Senate co-leader Dean Skelos in February, and language was included in the Senate’s budget resolution, Grisanti said.

The recently adopted budget includes a 27 percent increase for the payments to the town and to the county. Erie County will receive $288,560, an increase of $61,835.
