The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning this afternoon for Buffalo Creek near Gardenville, Cazenovia Creek Near Ebenezer and Cayuga Creek near Lancaster.
Minor flooding is forecast as creeks spill over their banks from rain runoff, and minor flooding could be seen in low lying areas of Lancaster and Alden. Minor flooding also can be expected in low lying areas east of Orchard Park Road and south of Ridge Road in West Seneca, and in parts of Cazenovia Park In South Buffalo.
The flood warning is in effect until Friday morning.
Also, National Grid was working to restore power outtages affecting 1,099 customers in Lewiston and 157 in the Tonawandas reported mid-afternoon. National Grid spokesmen said they expect to have full power restored to the customers in both areas by about 5:45 p.m.
As of Wednesday, 4.02 inches of rain has been recorded in Buffalo in June, and another 0.4 inches fell by 8 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
That’s well above the average rainfall this time of year. The norm for the first 12 days of June is 1.51 inches, and the average total for the entire month is 3.82 inches. It’s too early to tell whether the month will end on a dry note and be in the average range, or the pattern of precipitation will continue.
But here’s some good news about what seems like never-ending rain: It will end soon.
“It looks like today will be the last day of steady, all-day rain,” said meteorologist Jon Hitchcock of the National Weather Service.
Don’t put away the umbrellas and galoshes just yet. There could be a couple more showers Friday morning before it starts drying out in the afternoon.
Here’s some better news: Saturday looks like a really nice day with sunshine and highs in the low to mid 70s, Hitchcock said.
A persistent storm system has left much of the country getting rain, or as Hitchcock said, “There’s a lot of people sharing in our misery.”
After drying out a bit, there is a another chance of rain Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, but the systems are not as organized as what we’re seeing Thursday, and the rain will not last as long, he said.
“It looks like after today we might be turning a corner toward a better pattern,” Hitchcock said.
Let’s hope it doesn’t have webbed feet.
