A company that could employ more than 200 people is poised to buy a 43-acre site at Lake Erie Commerce Center, Hamburg Supervisor Steven J. Walters announced at his annual State of the Town address Friday.
It would be the first business to set up shop in the industrial park that the town is developing.
The sale price for the land at Bayview Road and Route 5 was $25,000 an acre, or $1.07 million, Walters said.
The Hamburg Land Development Corp. has approved the sale, but the deal has not closed yet, he said.
The buyer has asked to remain anonymous until the sale goes through, but Walters said it is a company that focuses on international trade and logistics.
“This is proof that our hard work and foresight has paid off,” he said.
The prospect of attracting a company employing more than 200 may be the big development of 2014 for Hamburg.
Walters also spoke of the town’s accomplishments in 2013, including an enlarged Hamburg Library, new recreation, youth and senior services building and record attendance at Woodlawn Beach.
He called 2013 an accomplished year, and a year of preparation, as he discussed the addition to the library, where construction will start soon.
“This expansion will give our community a library for the 21st century,” Walters told members of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce at the annual luncheon at Ilio DiPaolo’s Restaurant in Blasdell.
He discussed the town’s acquisition of the Frontier Learning Center on Southwestern Boulevard, which now houses the Recreation and Youth departments.
Renovations will take place this year at the site so the senior center and adult day care can move there.
The popularity of Woodlawn Beach State Park continues, with a record year in attendance last year. He said the Erie County Health Department told the town that more people went to Woodlawn than all the other public beaches in the county combined.
“These people, many of whom are not from Hamburg, are spending their money at our shops, restaurants and gas stations,” he said. “There is no better local tourist attraction in Erie County than Woodlawn Beach.”
He praised State Sen. Mark Grisanti and Assemblyman Sean Ryan for helping to secure a small increase in the revenue sharing funds from New York State for video lottery terminals at Hamburg Gaming, and asked them to renew efforts to have it fully restored.
Walters also noted that the tax rate has gone down five of the last seven years.
“Our fiscal conservative policies have truly righted the ship,” Walters said.
