Lackawanna
High school students in Lackawanna will have the opportunity to begin working toward an associate’s degree in a health-related field, thanks to a new initiative involving the Lackawanna City School District, Erie 1 BOCES, Catholic Health and Trocaire College. The new state-funded program, called P-TECH, short for Pathways in Technology Early College High School, will introduce high-school freshmen to a health career through Erie 1 BOCES.
The training will continue for six years, with students ultimately working toward a tuition-free associate’s degree in a health field from Trocaire College.
Internships and mentoring also will be set up in partnership with Catholic Health.
The P-TECH program, designed to give students access to high-paying jobs and careers in health care, will be available to freshmen at Lackawanna High School in September 2014. A maximum of 25 students will be selected to participate in the program.
An information session about the new program is being offered 5-6 p.m. Wednesday in the auditorium of Martin Road Elementary School, 135 Martin Road, Lackawanna.
Lackawanna residents with children currently in eighth grade are encouraged to attend.
