Wreck & Roll festival brings food, music and fun to pier

DUNKIRK – Several public events are lined up for this weekend’s kickoff of the sixth annual Wreck & Roll Weekend on the city pier on Lake Erie.

Buffalo’s fireboat, the Edward M. Cotter, will arrive at 5 p.m. today, and a firefighters’ hose race will take place at 6. This evening’s free entertainment will be Gina V. and the Barn Cats from 6 to 9.

Saturday, the “Anything That Floats” race will take place at 2 p.m. This year’s theme is “The Vikings of Chadwick Bay.”

Competition will feature an open division with unlimited team members and a minimal division with “teams” of just one or two members. Rules and registration will be available at 1 p.m. Saturday.

A chicken wing cook-off, mechanical bull, caricature artist, children’s bounce house, drawings and other vendors will be available all day Saturday.

There will be live music from 2 p.m. with Three Degrees North, and at 5 with Recess. Hot Rocks, a Rolling Stones tribute Band, will go on at 8.

Corporate sponsors are NRG Energy, Cott Corp., the Dunkirk Chamber of Commerce, National Grid, DFT Communications, Advanced Production Group and Coors Light.

Also this summer, Music on the Pier will feature free concerts every Thursday evening beginning at 6:30.
