Orchard Park Town Board members are still looking into the old Baker Road school to see whether it is suitable to be converted into a center for senior citizens.
The board has hired Wendel engineers to provide “building assessment services” for the old school. The Orchard Park Central School District has moved many of its administrative offices out of the building and into the new location at 2240 Southwestern Blvd. It plans to sell or lease its current office space.
The special-education, superintendent and public relations offices remain at 3330 Baker Road. The district bought the property at Southwestern Boulevard from Young Development Co. for $4.1 million and is moving all its administrative and transportation offices there.
Engineers from Wendel plan to visit the old school to assess the general condition of major architectural components of the building, including the roof and walls, and come up with an estimate of the cost to renovate it. The company also will provide an estimate of construction costs for a new building at Brush Mountain Park to house the senior center/community campus, Supervisor Janis Colarusso said.
The study will cost $2,400 and is the first of two phases of work.
If the first report indicates a favorable cost to renovate the old school, the town would have Wendel do a further assessment of mechanical, structural and electrical engineering of the building, the supervisor said. The second phase, if the board approves it, would cost $5,500.
